About the Choir and Orchestra

Joan Ashcraft

Music is an integral part of worship at Catalina Foothills Church. The music ministry provides an opportunity for musicians of all abilities to encourage and support one another spiritually as they use their musical gifts to enhance worship. The Catalina Foothills Church Chorale meets for rehearsal every Thursday night from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. For more information, please contact Dr. Joan Ashcraft at (520) 296-2106.

Joan Ashcraft is CFC’s Director of Fine Arts and is also the Director of Fine Arts for Tucson Unified School District. She is co-designer of the Opening Minds through the Arts Program (OMA), nationally recognized for its significant arts integration research and student achievement data. Under her leadership, TUSD Fine Arts was selected by Harvard University for a study analyzing quality arts education programs. She has presented OMA throughout the United States for the US Department of Education and is responsible for TUSD’s recognition as the only public school affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Recently, OMA received the prestigious Civic Ventures Purpose Prize to further its implementation and research. Her work in arts education appears in several national publications.

Joan has served on the Kennedy Center’s Arts Education Advisory Board, received the Governor’s Arts in Education Award twice, the University of Arizona’s Distinguished Alumni Award and Professional Education Award, the Arizona Music Educators Music Educator and Music Administrator of the Year Awards, and the Rotary Four Way Test Award.

Her deep love is for the music ministry at Catalina Foothills Church where weekly she is inspired by faithful musicians who joyfully dedicate their time preparing spiritually uplifting music for worship. She has produced many productions including Follow the Star, Come to the Manger, In His Footsteps, and Let Freedom Sing.

Joan and David are the proud parents of two sons, Christopher, Finance Director for the Catalina Council of the Boy Scouts, and Timothy, a recent graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point currently stationed at Ft. Hood.
