Listening to the Tapestry
The tapestry spoke, and we observed
A riot of colors and sounds - aware
Of youth who learn, and those who served
On land and sea and in the air.
The tapestry spoke, its warp and woof
Revealing proudly to the world
A testament of melodic proof
That freedom’s flag is still unfurled.
The tapestry spoke, in utterance bold,
Praising the deeds of warriors true
Whose faces, whether young or old
Are shaded in red and white and blue.
The tapestry spoke of liberty’s land,
Of beauty, grandeur, majesty.
Thus, singing, did we understand -
His truth is marching on in me!
The tapestry spoke, and humbly at last
We looked with fondest hope on the youth,
On those to whom the torch is passed,
On those who now will champion truth.
A poem by Dr. Tom Askew, inspired by the March 11, 2007 concert entitled “An American Tapestry” featuring the USMA Cadet Glee Club Chamber Choir and the Arts Express Choir and Orchestra at Sahuaro High School.
