Marcus Toole

Back to Global MissionsGet Flash Player

Under the shadow of the mighty Canadian Rockies, just south of Edmonton, Alberta a centuries old group of Native Americans are clustered in four reserves (reservations).  The Cree of the Montana, Louis Bull, Samson and Erminskin reserves share a common tongue and culture.  Centuries old rituals honor nature and mix in fear of and obeisance to the devil.  They live with one foot in the past and one foot in the present as their native culture competes with satellite TV and rock music for the hearts of the young.

Another voice was introduced into the mix with the arrival of Marcus Toole on the reserves.  A church planter of the Western Canada Presbytery and a missionary with Mission to the World (MTW), the mission arm of the PCA, Marcus is located in Hobbema, a town strategically near the reserves.  The church that he planted is called Jesus Church and was just given official status as a mission church of the PCA.

One CFC mission’s focus group has adopted Marcus as their ministry partner.  They meet monthly to pray for Marcus, correspond and encourage Marcus by email and to provide additional financial support over and above the regular support he receives from CFC.  A January email from Jesus Church congregant, Reggie Rabbit, shared how the summer mission’s teams open new doors for ministry on the reserves.  For most of the group this was the first email we ever received from a rabbit!  A team from the focus group will visit Marcus this summer to encourage him and his team, to become more familiar with the ministry and to identify opportunities for the future.  The findings of this team should be a valuable addition to our Toole-box!  Both as a focus group and as a congregation we want to enable Marcus and Jesus church to be a conduit for the gospel to reach the reserves as never before.

Current Prayer Requests:

  • Pray for additional workers as Marcus is stretched thin.  On a recent recruiting trip to Covenant seminary, Marcus met several promising candidates.
  • Pray for the two summer teams that will be going out under MTW in July.  They will engage in VBS, evangelism, construction and possibly sports.
  • Pray that Marcus will be able to resolve his visa status by the end of March.
